Squirrel Control

In the UK grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) can be a significant pest within gardens; whilst the majority of squirrels will remain to create dreys in trees, they are swift to adapt to any opportunities of a warmer and drier home in buildings. When squirrels enter properties, they should be evicted at the earliest opportunity as they are well documented to create significant damage to both timber beams and wire that are present within their way.

As with the rest of our website, we are not going to ramble on about the biology of squirrels and their control; if you are interested in finding out more information, we recommend that you look at the Wikipedia page here or the BPCA (Primary UK pest control association) page here.

Grey squirrels will initially often take advantage of small openings around fascias and soffits, often created by birds; once they gain access to the property, they will quickly enlarge any holes. Squirrels do not venture too far from their nest, and they certainly do not enter cavities or confined locations too far from the drey (this is usually a sign that you have rats or mice)

Proofing when the squirrel is not present is the recommended control method; however, caution must be undertaken to exclude all entrance points otherwise, squirrels will re-enter. Using specialist squirrel-specific traps (both humane and kill) can take time and often isn't an overnight control method; extreme care must be undertaken to prevent non-target access.
