Pheromone is an artificial female sex lure trap designed to attract male moths to a pest control device. Moth pheromones are used extensively in the UK and worldwide as an essential device to monitor pest treatment and inform the user of emerging infestations; whilst they are unlikely to control an established issue, they are an excellent tool as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.
Typically the main pheromone types sold in the UK are supplied on pads mixed with an adhesive glue; the pheromone attracts the target moth to the pad and then the glue will hold and prevent the moth from escaping, this quickly kills the moth which results in both a reduction of population and a break in the lifecycle. Alternatively, tab versions are available but these are primarily used within large industrial premises and require a larger moth pot.
The main 2 types of pheromones available are Tineola bisselliella (Common Clothes Moth) and Plodia interpunctella (Indian Meal Moth). Pheromone traps are specific to the species and are unlikely to work with other moth species, so it’s essential to identify the target species before application.
