Ant Control

Ants are one of the most common species of insects found in the UK; often they will go unnoticed and certainly cause no issues unless they start to infest properties and areas of human habitation. We have several species of ants in the UK but generally only the black ant (Lasius niger) will cause a pest-related issue.

Most people will only encounter the worker ants which are typically the 'tip of the iceberg' when it comes to a population's actual size; a significant mistake that customers will often make is that treatment is undertaken to control these and not the source of the problem; the sole queen that is producing the entire population.

For best results users should understand the biology and behaviour of ants;. at ProPest we have decided not to create extensive amounts of text on this subject however if you wish to find out further information on this subject Wikipedia has a vast amount of relevant information ants which can be found here; alternatively, the BPCA is the leading UK association for pest control related information including a treatment page that can be found here.

The principal treatment of ants is straightforward and only requires the application of insecticides to the area of infestation, with the main aim of treatment to nests that are often located within the area of the queen. Sprays are best for open areas where no direct ant populations are present; powders are the long-term alternative that is best directed to the nest or within confined areas that the target ants are not able to avoid.

Important Note: The above information and below products are specific to the garden ant, which is also the most common pest ant found in the UK. Whist rare some other types of ants, commonly known as tropical ants such as the pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) or ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum) can be found in UK properties; they are generally semi-transparent and smaller compared to regular ants. It's essential that if you have this type of ant that professional treatment is undertaken and we do not directly sell products that will control these ants. Find an appropriate company at the BPCA site here.
