Woodworm is the popular name mainly for the larvae of the common furniture beetles (Anobium punctatum) but does also include other similar beetles that infest wood. Woodworm can cause considerable damage to timber within buildings and steps should be undertaken to highlight and control the issue.
Common furniture beetle is a slow-acting pest and often can go unnoticed for several years before the activity is present; identification usually is from the exit holes after the larvae have transformed into the adult.
Treatment of timber for woodworm will vary however, spraying the wood with a long-lasting insecticide will suffice in most treatment control as often the larvae are only present under the initial surface. This is not the case for all types of beetles, especially the death watch beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum) that can burrow deeper into the core of the wood, and a different approach, such as injection, should be undertaken.
Woodworm treatments are straightforward, but care should be undertaken with preparation, as the timber should be clean and dust-free before insecticide application. A mask and suitable protective equipment should be worn, especially within confined spaces such as when working in an attic space.
