Pigeon spikes are commonly used throughout the UK as a method to prevent pigeons and other similar-sized birds from landing, the spike tips have a blunt edge and are not designed to harm pigeons. Spikes can be installed in a wide range of scenarios including on ledges, pipes and other appropriate landing locations.
Spikes are easy to install and require minimal DIY experience. A range of spikes are available depending on the requirement of the task. Plastic pigeon spikes are a budget option for preventing pigeons from landing on aerials but they are prone to discolourisation over a long time period. Stainless steel spikes are the most commonly used spike as they are long-lasting and durable; a range of widths from narrow to wide are available.
Users must understand the limitations of bird spikes. We do not recommend installing spikes in areas where pigeons are nesting unless no other alternative solutions are available. To totally exclude pigeons from landing within an area we would always recommend netting as this is a physical barrier that they cannot pass.
Spikes are best attached to the surface using a strong flexible adhesive and for best results combining adhesive with screws will provide a permanent solution. The placement of spikes on bitumen and lead surfaces should be avoided.
When working at height we always recommend that installers carry out a risk assessment and take the necessary precautions.
