Gull spikes are an excellent and safe method of preventing gulls from landing on unwanted areas such as walls. It is important that users understand the limitations of spikes as they are unlikely to work in all scenarios. Spikes should not be directly used as a barrier to prevent gulls from accessing nesting sites. For these types of areas we recommend using a physical barrier such as netting or weldmesh.
Spikes are best used to stop gulls from landing on high areas within their territory such as on ridge tiles, chimney stacks and parapet walls. By removing these areas gulls are more likely to relocate to a more favourable location. This is less likely to work in areas with a high population or previous history of nesting. For best results, a combination of spikes and netting should be used.
The spike tips are blunt and do not harm the bird although determined gulls may use their size and weight to physically push the spikes so for this reason spikes are best installed in areas away from direct adjacent landing sites. A strong flexible fixing adhesive should be used to cope with the UK weather and when possible should be in combination with screws. Any access equipment should remain in situ until the adhesive has set.
We do not recommend using spikes over large areas such as a flat roof or on unstable surfaces such as bitumen or lead. Gull spikes have a higher reach and are not the same as the pigeon alternatives; these lower height tips will often fail when used against gulls.
