Gull Control

The majority of gulls do not cause an issue but there are situations when gulls can be bothersome or even dangerous when nesting on roofs or being defensive around their chicks. Debris from nesting can cause water damage to buildings.

In the UK we have several gull species but this category and related products is specifically targeted for the Herring Gull (Larus argentatus). For further information on gulls Wikipedia is an excellent reference tool and the relevant page can be found here. Also, the BPCA (the leading UK pest control association) has an informative page on controlling gulls and this page can be found here.

Herring gulls are protected by law, so it is vital that any prevention work is done outside of the nesting season when any existing nest has been abandoned. You should not, under any circumstances, remove active nests or chicks without prior permission from Natural England.

Proofing against gulls can be difficult as they can be determined to overcome an installed system. For best results we recommend creating a netting system that prevents gulls from landing. If netting is not a suitable method then installing spikes in areas of high perching, such as the apex of a roof and the top of a chimney, will make their territory less desirable and be more likely to encourage them to move to a different location. Please note that this may not work in areas of high gull population.

At ProPest we do not sell audio scaring systems as they have shown no long-term effect on preventing gulls from habiting a building. In fact, we have visited sites where gulls have created nests next to the speakers!
