Pigeons can be a nuisance when they gather in large populations and roost or nest on properties. The associated guano of pigeons harbours a wide range of bacteria and viruses that can cause human health issues and so therefore if you have pigeons on a property it is recommended to take preventative action as soon as possible.

In the UK we have several species of pigeons but this category is specifically for the Feral Pigeon (Columba livia), also known as the Rock Dove. Controlling pigeons is generally straightforward, the idea is to install a physical barrier to prevent access or landing and then the pigeons will leave and find an alternative nest site.

The most popular pigeon deterrents are netting and spikes. Netting is a physical barrier that pigeons are unable to pass; netting is reasonable in cost but can be complicated to install and often requires some DIY skills. Spikes are more suitable for preventing pigeons from landing and installing them with an adhesive is very easy to install but users should be aware of their limitations. Other prevention works such as posts and wires can be a very cost-effective alternative but may take longer to install and may not be suitable for areas with a high population of pigeons.
