Flea Control

Fleas are a common pest found in the UK and once established within a property can be difficult to eradicate without insecticides. The problematic flea commonly encountered is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis); despite the name they are not exclusive to cats and are often also found on dogs and other animals. Most people who encounter fleas will not directly see them but instead will notice bites mainly around the ankle as well as others not covered in clothing.

For best results, users should understand the biology and behaviour of fleas. At ProPest we have decided not to create extensive amounts of text on this subject however if you wish to find out further information on this subject Wikipedia has a vast amount of relevant information ants which can be found here; alternatively, the BPCA is the leading UK association for pest control related information including a treatment page that can be found here.

Before undertaking any treatment works for fleas it is essential to treat any pets with a suitable flea treatment; in the long term if the fleas are still using the host animal as a food source total eradication will be unlikely. Treatments for fleas are normally straightforward and spraying the carpets within the infestation areas will likely suffice for long-term control. Void smoke and aerosols are a useful addition to kill adult fleas and are recommended; however, they are unlikely to work as the sole treatment method. Powders are a popular alternative to sprays and are especially useful for confined areas such as under carpets and furniture.

One of the essential parts of any treatment is vacuuming; we always recommend vacuuming the entire treatment area before treatment is undertaken as this activates the flea eggs and then they are more likely to come into contact with the treatment once sprayed. Once a treatment has been undertaken vacuuming should not commence for at least 10 days. Pets and animals should always be removed from the treatment areas.
