Sparrows can be a nuisance in high numbers and often require controlling when they become a pest, such as when they loiter around a food site or nest in buildings. It is important to stress that all birds, including sparrows, are protected by law and so any bird control work must be undertaken only when there are no nesting materials and the site is abandoned. Some prevention work may require a specific licence from Natural England.
In the UK we normally encounter the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). If you wish to understand more about the behaviour and biology of this bird Wikipedia is an excellent reference tool and the related page can be found here. Also, the BPCA (the main UK pest control association) has an informative page on controlling sparrows and this page can be found here.
Due to the size of sparrows, it can be difficult to physically prevent sparrows from landing or accessing an area. When possible users should take all steps to create a physical barrier that sparrows are unable to pass.
The most common method of prevention and most suitable is netting as it creates a physical barrier that excludes sparrows. However, it is important that the system is installed correctly otherwise sparrows can quickly take advantage of any weakness within the system. We do not sell audio or sonic devices as they have been proven to not work.
