Rat poison is a common term for rodenticide, a chemical used to kill rats. Rodenticide is a convenient way to quickly control established populations of rats within and around buildings, however, users should understand the limitation of using this product, the risk of non-target access as well as the growing issue of resistance within some regions of the UK.
Before undertaking rat control with poison all other methods must have been unsuccessful, this would include the use of proofing and traps, as often the majority of treatments can be controlled using these processes, rodenticide should be used as a last option. In the UK we currently have 3 primary active ingredients approved for amateur control, difenacoum, bromadiolone and brodifacoum, all are considered second-generation baits and are considerably more potent than first-generation options such as warfarin.
Selecting the correct active ingredient and formulation is a critical part of any rodenticide treatment. To help users understand the options we have a handy information page that can be found here. It is essential to mention that all rodenticides must be used within a tamper-resistant bait station, this is critical as it both complies with UK regulations and prevents non-target access to the product.
