Mouse poison is the common term for rodenticide; a chemical used to kill mice. Rodenticide is a common and well-tested method of mouse control and a recommended treatment device when other approaches such as traps or prevention fail; users should however understand the risks involved with using rodenticide as this product can be harmful to non-target animals.
In the UK we have 3 primary active ingredients approved for amateur use, difenacoum, bromadiolone and brodifacoum. For best results, we recommend that difenacoum is used as the initial product with brodifacoum as a backup for stubborn infestations. As well as the active ingredients, the formulation is an essential method of consideration; they are available in 3 formats: blocks, pasta and wheat. Wheat is a great all-rounder accepted by most mice whilst pasta is an excellent alternative for dealing with mice within towns. Blocks are great for damp environments such as a kitchen or cellar.
It’s important to note that all amateur-approved rodenticides within the UK must be used within a tamper-resistant bait station. We also have more specific pages on the use of rodenticide such as here.
